Summit knew they needed to play almost a flawless game
if they were to defeat heavily favored Mendham. Unfortunately,
things got off to a bad start when Mendham ran up a 7-0 lead.
To make matters worse Stephanie Bruce picked up two early
fouls and had to take a seat. By early in the 2nd quarter Mendham
had built an 11 point lead before Bruce returned to the
floor. Things began to turnaround when Dana Proper hit
a 3-pointer. Then Eight points by Bruce and another 5
by Dana Proper cut Mendham's lead to 3 points. Mendham
left the court at halftime a bit shaken.
When the 2nd half began Mendham's star, Kelly Suminski, really
took charge and ran off 8 consecutive points and suddenly the
lead was back to eleven points. Summit never really made a serious
threat after that run.
Summit was called for 22 fouls compared to 12 for Mendham.
In fact, Summit out scored Mendham from the field 37-36, but
Mendham held an 18 to 4 advantage from the foul line. Unofficially,
Stephanie Bruce led the Summit season scoring with 407
points and also was the teams leading rebounder. Danielle
Proper finished second with 254 points and had the team's
best free throw percentage at 71%. It is hard to measure how
much these seniors will be missed. |
