Summit advanced to the second round of the Union County
Tournament with a lopsided victory over a seriously out staffed
Roselle Park. In some ways it wasn't as easy as it looked. Roselle
Park looked very good in the first quarter as they took a 14-13
lead and held Summit to only four field goals (although Summit
took 19 shots in the quarter). The Summit defense really turned
the tide in the 2nd quarter. It forced so many turnovers that
Roselle Park's offense collapsed, producing only 2 points. Stephanie
Bruce came on strong and dropped in 6 baskets to lead Summit
to a 25-2 quarter. The ferocious defense and Summit's ability
to play 11 players literally wore down Roselle Park who only
had 2 players on their bench. The outcome of the game was really
determined in the second period. The second half scoring was
almost even, but Roselle Park didn't have the energy to mount
any kind of serious rally.
It was a good thing that Summit's defense was so effective
in producing turnovers because Summit needed 77 shots to generate
its 23 field goals (30%). Summit will face Scotch Plains on Friday
in the second round of the UCT. The regular season Parsippany
game will be played on Wednesday, instead of Tuesday. The Thursday
game against Morris Hills has been postponed because of NJSIAA's
rules against playing 3 days in a row. |
