The inability to stop the big plays by Dover and the failure
to capitalize on two first and tens inside the Dover 5 yardline
turned a close game into a lopsided loss.Things started well when,
on Summit's second possession, Mike Nelson out ran the
Dover secondary for a 70 yard touchdown. Nick Monaco added
the PAT and Summit was up 7-0. Unfortunately, Dover capped its
next possession with a 38 yard TD pass to a wide open receiver.
Summit took the ensuing kickoff and drove to a 1st down on Dover's
5 yard line on the running of John Martini and Bill
Wheeler. Four runs up the middle ended with the ball a few
inches short and a 72 yard drive went for naught.
Later in the 2nd quarter, after Summit had fallen a foot short
of a first down on the Dover 30, Dover scored their 2nd TD on
a 70 yard drive highlighted by 39 and 25 yard runs. The half ended
with Dover up 14-7.
Dover took the 2nd half kickoff and drove 65 yards in 11 plays,
the TD coming on a 21 yard pass to a wide open receiver. Things
were looking grim but they got a lot worse when Summit fumbled
the kickoff return and Dover took over on Summit's 27. Three plays
later Dover had their 4th TD on a 26 yard pass play. Summit was
determined to get back in the game and launched a drive highlighted
by three passes to Jon Campagna and a 29 yard run by Martini.
A 6 yard run by Wheeler gave Summit a 1st down on the Dover
4. On the next play Keith Schroeder, faced with broken
play, managed to get to the 3. On 2nd down a mixup occurred and
two backs went in motion at the same time resulting in a 5 yard
penalty. Wheeler made it back to the 5, but on the next
play Dover intercepted a pass on the one yard line.
Early in the 4th quarter Dover was forced to punt but the return
was fumbled and a Dover lineman picked up the ball and ran into
the end zone to put Dover ahead 41-7. It is to Summit's credit
that they didn't quit and managed two more scoring drives of 80
and 72. The first drive was supported by 5 pass completions, 3
by Wheeler and 2 by Matt Benedetti, the score coming
on a Benedetti reception. The final Summit score came on
a 24 yard pass to Wheeler. Following both these TDs Monaco
kicked the extra point. So far this season Monaco is a
perfect 6 of 6 for PATs.
