Summit continued to suffer from an inability to stop the big play. Mendham took the opening kickoff and on the first play ran 67 yards for a TD. In fact, Mendham scored the next two times they had the ball, a 67 yard pass and a 39 yard pass. In the 1st quarter Mendham ran a grand total of seven plays and was up 20-0. However, there were many pluses to the evening. After that brutal 1st quarter Summit outscored Mendham 20-15. Early in the 4th Quarter Summit closed to within a TD at 20-27, but Mendham answered with its final TD.

After the initial shock of Mendham's opening score Summit took the kickoff and drove to Mendham's 26 powered by passes to Jon Campagna and Billy Wheeler. The drive ended when a 4th down pass went through the receiver's hands at the 3 yard line. Summit got on the scoreboard early in the 2nd quarter when passes to Campagna and Matt Benedetti gave Summit a 1st down on Mendham's 45. On the next play John Martini broke through and out ran the Mendham secondary. Mendham answered Summit's threat with a 10 play/51 yard drive.

The 2nd quarter started well. Summit took the kickoff and moved to a first down on the Mendham 5 yard line on the running of Martini and a nice reception by Benedetti. On 2nd down and 4 to go a Mendham defender stepped in front of the Summit receiver and intercepted a Keith Schroeder pass at the goal line and returned it to Summit's 38. Fortunately Mendham lost possession on a fumble at the Summit 17. Three passes to Benedetti and 47 yard pass to Wheeler gave Summit a 1st down on the Mendham's 13 yard line. On 4th and 11 Schroeder rolled out, saw a running opportunity and with a fine second effort gave Summit a 1st down on the 3 yard line. Two plays later Martini scored.to close the gap to 14-27. On the kickoff Mendham fumbled on their 40 and Summit came up with the ball. On the next play Schroeder hit Wheeler deep for another TD. Nick Monaco's string of 8 consecutive successful PATs came to an end when the kick went just wide of the uprights.

Summit threatened once more when Mendham turned over the ball on downs at Summit's 7 yard line. Four passes (a 19 yard pass to Wheeler, a 16 yarder to Campagna, and 16 and 9 yard passes to Benedetti) moved Summit to Mendham's 31 yard line. An interception in the end zone ended the drive.

Schroeder and his primary receivers (Wheeler, Campagna and Benedetti) had the best Summit passing game in decades as they completed 20 of 37 for 285 yards.
