Parsippany Hills had two powerful offensive weapons in John Morant (one of the most highly recruited players in the state) and R.J. Cobb. Every time that Summit moved in front one of those two scored to take back the lead. In spite of the loss, there were many positives for Summit. For example, 414 total yards of offense against a quality team. PH struck first as they went 64 yards in 3 plays, including a 34 yard run by Cobb and a 13 yard pass to Morant for the TD. Summit came right back, going 62 yards in 2 plays, capped by a 57 yard TD pass from Keith Schroeder to Jon Campagna. Campagna was headed for a good gain, but it was turned into a touchdown when John Martini came roaring up and proceeded to muscle aside two PH defenders with the best exhibition of down field blocking seen in years. Sophomore Nick Monaco kicked the extra point to put Summit ahead 7-6. PH immediately answered with a 71 yard/6 play drive, capped by a 5 yard run by Cobb.

Summit took the next kickoff and drove to the PH 21 before turning it over on an interception. Fortunately, PH fumbled on the next play and Summit scored 3 plays later on a 23 yard TD pass to Mike Nelson. Monaco's PAT put Summit ahead 14-13. Again Summit's celebration was shut down by a 66 yard TD pass to Morant. A two point conversion failed and Summit was down 13-19. Instead of folding, Summit launched a 7 play, 78 yard drive helped by a 20 yard screen pass to Nelson that moved the ball to the PH 15. From there, Martini blasted his way to a TD. The 2-point try failed but Summit was back on top 20-19. Spirits were again dashed when Morant took the kickoff and ran through the entire Summit defense for an 80 yard TD and a 20-25 lead.

Summit had a golden opportunity to end the 1st half with the lead when 2 successive passes from Schroeder to Bill Wheeler moved Summit from its 30 to the PH 18. Another pass to Nelson gave Summit a 1st down on the PH 4 yard line. With over 1 minute remaining in the half (and one timeout left) it was looking good for Summit. However, Summit chose to spend a down by spiking the ball and then failed to get the next play off in time and was penalized 5 yards. Now it was 2nd and 9. A run went nowhere and Schroeder was sacked on 3rd down. On 4th down Schroeder hit Campagna in the end zone but he was ruled out of bounds.

Parsippany Hills started the 2nd half with a drive to the Summit 7 yard line, but a FG attempt failed. Neither side threatened for the rest of the 3rd quarter. At the beginning of the 4th quarter PH capitalized on a short punt and scored from Summit's 37 in two plays. This gave PH a 20-31 lead. But Summit didn't quit. Summit took the next kickoff and moved from their 27 to a first down at the PH 18. This drive was keyed by a 43 yard run by Martini and two Schroeder passes to Wheeler. On first down Martini broke loose and seemed headed for a TD when Morant came up from behind and forced a fumble at the PH 3 yard line. This ended Summit's hopes. PH's final score came at the very end of the game on a 50 yard run.

The two teams combined for 876 yards of total offense. This is remarkable when you remember that high school games are only 48 minutes long.
