West Essex came into this game undefeated and Summit gave them everything they could handle. Summit's defense allowed them only 151 yards rushing (a far cry from the 485 yards of the week before). If not for a fumble that exchanged hands three times before being returned 57 yards for a TD this would have been quite a different ball game. Summit's passing game struggled a bit as Keith Schroeder was sacked 4 times and intercepted 3 times. West Essex must have seen the Mt. Olive films because they double teamed Billy Wheeler on every pass play and effectively shut him down as a receiving target. However, Mike Nelson and Jon Campagna stepped up to fill the gap with 8 and 4 receptions respectively.

West Essex scored first on their second possession. An 8 yard run capped a 10 play 82 yard drive. On the following kickoff Nelson reversed the ball to Wheeler who raced 88 yards for the tieing score. Unfortunately, West Essex took the next kickoff and drove 60 yards in 6 plays to regain the lead. Both of WE's scoring drives were aided by key 15 yard penalties on Summit. In fact, Summit suffered from 112 yards of penalties to only 46 yards for WE. Shortly before the end of the half Summit fumbled, a WE defender fell on the ball but it squirted loose and a Summit player fell on it but it again came loose and was picked up by a WE lineman who lumbered into the end zone.

Summit's final score came in the 3rd quarter on an interception by Wheeler on the WE 25 yard line. With 4th and one on the 16 yard line Schroeder executed a good QB sneak to the 12. Then on 4th down at the 12 Schroeder hit Nelson for a TD.

In the 4th quarter Summit moved from their 22 to the WE 31 on receptions by Campagna, Nelson and J.P. Coviello. Sadly, a pass into double coverage was intercepted at the goal line. Summit's final chance came with 2:27 remaining. A reception by Campagna resulted in a 1st down at the WE 36, but four incomplete passes ended Summit's hopes.
