In the opening round of the Cron Tournament, Summit fell behind in the first period only to have Granger Jewett tie the score with a long range shot into the upper left corner of the goal. Again, the Hilltoppers fell behind before Brendan Gallinek tipped in a Jewett shot to knot the contest. The Hilltoppers were in this game for the first two periods with Jake Grabowski scoring and Sam Evans tipping in a Jamie Stack shot from the point. Lost 9-1. Summit skated evenly in the first period an actually out shot their opponent, but fell behind 1-0 Mendham wore down the Summit attack and hit for a barrage of goals. Jake Grabowski scored the lone goal. The high energy skating of Robby White and Sam Evans was the positive note for the Hilltoppers.(reporting by Rick Weber)

Wed 12/13 | 6PM | West Essex Cron Tournament@War A | Won 7-4 Playing for third place in the George T. Cron Tournament, Summit forged a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Jake Grabowski and Brendan Gallinek. West Essex tied the score in the second period, but Gallinek converted a pass to the goal crease from Grabowski to take the lead 3-2. Again, West Essex tied the score before the end of the second period. The break in between periods helped the Hilltoppers regroup, as Jason Bell scored on a power play, Sam Kenyon scored off a pass assisted by Will Sangree and Eamon Troy, and Grabowski scored in a short handed situation. West Essex added a goal before Gallinek added his third of the game for a 7-4 Hilltopper win and the third place trophy. Brain Curley registered 24 saves in goal.(reporting by Rick Weber) |

Tied 1-1. The Hilltoppers fell behind 1-0 early in the game but fought back for the balance of the game. Summit clearly out-skated their opponent and scored late in the third period when Jason Bell redirected a shot from the point. Lost 4-3. The Hilltoppers dropped a close game to their rival Watchung Hills. Summit fell behind 3-0, before Eamon Troy sent a pass to Sam Kenyon who scored to start a come back. Jake Grabowski added two scores to tie the game. Summit continued to rally against a tired opponent, but couldn't get the winning score. Late in the third period Brian Curley made a phenomenal skate save off a point blank shot to keep Summit in the game. The Hilltoppers surrendered a power play score late in the third. Won 7-1. The Hilltoppers coasted to a victory as Bobby Lawrence collected his first career goal to put Summit up early in the first period. Dan Weber, Brendan Lidner (first career goal) and Eamon Troy all scored to boost the lead to 4-0. Tallies by Brenden Gallinek, Jamie Stack and Sam Kenyon brought the score to 7-0 and a chance for all players to log some ice time. (reporting by Rick Weber)

Won 3-2. In one of the most exciting games of the year, Bobby Lawrence set up Jake Grabowski for a 1-0 Summit lead in the second period. Less than a minute later, Cranford tied the score. The Hilltoppers continued to skate quickly and check hard even though shorthanded due to injuries. Early in the third period, Cranford took a 2-1 lead off a power play goal. The Hilltoppers fought back with a barrage of shots and finally tied the score at 2 with 1:51 remaining in the game, as Grabowski hit the net. Not to settle for a tie, Summit continued to skate hard and wound up getting a Jamie Stack long pass to Grabowski who converted the game winner with less that a minute to play. Stack and Will Sangree provided defensive support for goalie Brian Curley. This game was recorded with play by play commentators on SportsNet America and available for viewing on the internet on December 22. (reporting by Rick Weber)

Jake Grabowski scored on a mid range slap shot that found the net. Hillsborough answered to tie the score until Jason Bell took a Grabowski pass, settled the puck and found the five hole for a 2-1 lead, after one period. The ice tilted against Summit and Hillsborough took advantage of some untimely penalties and a slower pace Summit squad during the second period to take a 6-2 lead. Grabowski and Bell added tallies and Granger Jewett scored on a slap shot from the point. The third period scores weren't enough as Summit lost 8-5 (reporting by Rick Weber) |
Fri 01/05 | 4:10PM | (H) Cranford@USA A | Tie 6-6 In the first period the Hilltoppers out skated and out shot Cranford as Jake Grabowski scored two and set up Jason Bell for the third Summit goal and a 3-0 lead. The second period pace slowed a bit and penalties chopped away at the Summit lead as Cranford tied the score at 3. Late in the second period Grabowski hit the net for his third of the game and a 4-3 Hilltopper lead. Cranford took advantage of their power play and scored three to put Summit in a huge 6-3 deficit. The Hilltoppers continued their effort and with a little over a minute remaining in the game pulled goalie Doug Vreeland for an extra skater. Cranford took their second penalty and provided Summit with a 6 skaters to 3 power play, but Summit's goal remained unguarded. With less than a minute left in the game, and during a flurry of shots, Grabowski shot low through a crowd and pulled Summit within one. In the last 36 seconds, still with a 6 man on 4 advantage, Summit had 5 shots on goal and finally Jamie Stack hit the top left corner of the net for a 6-6- score with 5 seconds remaining in the game. Won 8-3. The Hilltoppers had a rough start in the first period as South Brunswick out shot Summit 5-2 and captured a 1-0 lead in the beginning of the game. Jake Grabowski responded with a mid-range low slap shot off a feed from Jason Bell to tie the score. Sam Kenyon's effective fore checking caused a turnover that he converted into a 2-1 Summit lead. Bell scored off a Grabowski pass to the goal crease to add to the lead. The passing improved through out the game and the power play was effective as Brenden Gallinek chipped in a goal and Grabowski and Bell added scores. Granger Jewett rushed in from the point to take a feed and hit the net. Gallinek added his second of the game by scoring from a scrum in front of the net to seal the victory. Won 3-2. Summit won a battle in which they couldn't open up a big lead but wound up on top in the end. From the goal crease, Bobby Lawrence scored off a Jason Bell and Jake Grabowski assist. Later in the first Eamon Troy scored to open up a 2-0 lead. Hunterdon Central closed the gap to 2-1 but were called for a penalty that gave Sam Kenyon a penalty shot opportunity. Kenyon picked up the puck, skated in and faked the goalie to the left and shot inside of the right goal post for a 3-1 Hilltopper lead. Won 2-0 Senior goalie Doug Vreeland of Summit knew a victory over rival Westfield would go a long way in promoting added confidence among his teammates. The 5-11, 195-pound, two-year starter, did just that when he turned aside 17 shots to notch his second career shutout, first this season. The triumph was the first for Summit (9-4-2) over Westfield (6-6-2) since a 3-1 decision on Jan. 26, 2005. Summit entered the game winless against Westfield in its last five contests (0-3-2), including a 6-3 setback in the first round of the Van Cott Cup last winter. Summit is now riding its first four-game winning streak since the 2001-02 campaign, when it fashioned a 16-9-1 mark. Westfield was able to dictate much of the tempo during a scoreless first period but couldnt solve Summits Vreeland, who made eight saves. Westfield starter Eric Zagorski (23 saves) needed just four saves in the opening stanza. Summit then dominated play over the final two periods, outshooting Westfield, 21-10, in that span. Senior Jake Grabowski broke the ice with 3:41 left in the second when he tipped home a shot from the slot to give Summit a 1-0 edge. Freshman Bobby Lawrence gave Summit a 2-0 advantage with 3:39 left in the third when he converted feeds from Grabowski and Jason Bell. Lost 3-2. The Hilltoppers skated evenly with their opponent in the first two periods but weren't able to keep the pace in the third as Summit lost in a heartbreaking defeat. Brenden Gallinek opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal to build a 1-0 first period lead. Sam Kenyon added a score, assisted by Gallinek and Jake Grabowski to give Summit a 2-0 lead after two periods. Verona scored early in the third to close the gap and then, late in the third added two tallies to drop Summit. Jamie Stack and Granger Jewett were solid on defense and Eamon Troy and Jason Bell played a hard checking, physical game. (reporting by Rick Weber)

Whether it was a week off from playing a game or the strenuous mid term exam schedule, Summit started the game flat and allowed Hillsborough to dominate and build a 2-0 lead. Late in the second period Sam Kenyon cut the deficit in half as he hit the net. Summit remained in the game and set up another late game rally. During a power play and with Summit's goalie pulled for an extra skater, Hillsborough was called for another penalty. Summit had a 6 on 3 power play and capitalized as Jake Grabowski hit the net with a shot from the face off circle with only 17 seconds left on the clock. Lost 5-3. Summit lost in a closely fought battle against their non conference rival, Chatham. The Hilltoppers kept the puck deep in the offensive zone and applied pressure for most of the scoreless first period. The fore checking of Bobby Lawrence created an opportunity for Jason Bell who hit the net for a 1-0 lead. Brenden Gallinek scored as he chipped in the puck from a scrum in front of the goal for a 2-0 lead. Chatham answered with two power play goals and then took the lead with seconds remaining in the second period. In the third period, it seemed as Summit would tie as the referee blew the whistle and signaled a goal, only to be waived off. Chatham answered with a goal for a 4-2 lead before some aggressive fore checking by Eamon Troy created a turnover which Troy converted into a goal. Chatham added to their lead to drop Summit 5-3. Doug Vreeland recorded 27 saves, many of which were "highlight" variety. Although dropping a contest to their neighbor is never positive, the overall play by Summit was some of the best of this year. Lost 3-2 Van Cott Cup playoff ice hockey provided the opportunity for the Hilltoppers to play 47 minutes and 53 seconds of spirited hockey. Summit skated fast and checked hard for the first two periods without Sam Kenyon and Brenden Gallinek who were sidelined with injuries. Brendan Lidner, Jake Grabowski and Jason Bell sparked the offense. Bobby Lawrence, Eamon Troy and Dan Weber made sure that Summit did not let up and continued to rally late in the third period. Grabowski tied the score and Bell gave Summit the lead with a little over two minutes remaining in the game. Montclair Kimberly tied the contest late in the third, pushing the game into a sudden death overtime period. Montclair Kimberly scored two minutes into the overtime period to drop Summit 3-2. Doug Vreeland was stellar in goal making some sensational saves. Granger Jewett,Jamie Stack,Will Sangree and Sam Evans were physical on defense for Summit. The Hilltoppers played some of the best hockey that they have played all year for the entire game.

Lost 5-4 OT Shootout. In the first round of the State playoffs, the Hilltoppers dominated the first period and a half of the game. Bobby Lawrence scored on a quick wrap around goal and Jake Grabowski scored on a low slap shot for 2-0 lead. Morristown answered with a goal before Sam Kenyon hit the net for a 3-1 lead. During a momentary lapse of intensity by Summit, Morristown hit the net three times and took a 4-3 lead into the locker room. Summit was out shot 19-13 in the first two periods. Facing elimination, the Hilltoppers rallied to tie as Eamon Troy scored during a period where Summit took control of the ice. During the 15 minute sudden death overtime, the Hilltoppers out shot and out skated their opponent but, couldn't find the net. The game moved to shootout format where each team took turns at placing a skater in a 1 on 1 attempt against the goalie for five rounds. Summit's Kenyon and Jamie Stack each beat the goalie with crafty side to side moves, but Morristown also tallied twice. Morristown scored in the ninth stanza and Summit couldn't answer with a goal. Brian Curley in goal, saved 6 of the 9 shootout attempts.
