Chatham
  Away
4:30PM Won 8-7 Adolfo Arrieta scored the winning goal in overtime after Summit had allowed a 7-3 lead slip away in the final 4 minutes of the game. The shot, with 1:53 left in overtime, lifted #2 Summit to victory over #6 Chatham yesterday in Chatham.

Chatham had stormed back with four unanswered goals in the last 3:44 of regulation, and then won the overtime faceoff. Brian Feeney rejected a hard shot for Summit in a man-down situation with 2:37 left to finally halt Chatham's momentum.

Chatham dominated the draw but it didn't matter early in the game because Summit's shooters were so hot and the team's zone defense limited Chatham's access to the crease. Summit made three of four shots in the third period to grab a 6-2 lead behind goals by Scioscia, Arrieta and Marcel Godino. But after Godino's goal with 5:28 to go in the 3rd period, Summit managed only five more shots in regulation, one a goal by Kyle Mahoney with 4:52 to play for a 7-3 lead.

Summit's stubborn defense, backed by the steady Brian Feeney - and its patience on offense helped stake Summit to a 3-1 halftime lead. Its tight passing game extended that lead in the third quarter but Chatham's faceoff work was steadily putting a strain on Summit's defense.

Senior attackman Kyle Mahoney scored two goals to add to his team high of 39 and junior attackman James Kennedy, Summit's leading scorer with 61 points, contributed one goal and three assists.

Summit was aided by the smart, hard-working play of defenders Bobby Lawrence, Jules Godino, Ryan Troy and Joe Jaskolski.

Summit's ability to win ground balls and possess on its offensive end helped limit Ridgewood to only three shots in the fourth quarter. Mahoney forged a 4-2 lead when he cut hard to the crease and fielded a pass from behind by Kennedy with 11:14 to play. Kennedy opened a three-goal lead by ending a possession of nearly three minutes with a strong wraparound goal with 6:49 left.

Sat 5/16 Johnson UCT Finals Away 7:30PM Won 9-3 Summit won another Union County Champinship going away, but not before Johnson threw a real scare into them. Kyle Mahoney had the only score of the 1st quarter. However, Johnson scored early in the 2nd quarter to tie the game. With 4:50 on the clock Marcel Godino put Summit back on top 2-1. Just a few seconds later Johnson re-knotted the score and with 0:35 on the clock Johnson scored again to take a 3-2 at the half.

We don't know what was said during the half time, but it worked. Summit ripped off 4 unanswered 3rd quarter goals. Wed 05/20 Mt. Olive Group2 1st rnd. Home 4:00PM Won 9-1 Even though the score was only 2-0 at the end off the 1st quarter, the handwriting was on the wall. Summit dominated the play from the opening face off. Kyle Mahoney scored Summit's first goal off a feed from John Scioscia. Adolfo Arrieta made it 2-0 at the 2:39 mark of the quarter. Another Scioscia to Mahoney goal was followed by a James Kennedy to Mahoney goal to make the score 4-0 at halftime. Sat 05/23 Montville Group II Quarterfinals Home 11:00AM Won 18-5 Through the first 10 minutes it looked like this might be a close game. In the 3:30 Kennedy scored twice, Kyle Mahoney scored (assist by Kennedy) and Joe Cordrey scored (assist by Yager). Summit led 5-2 and it was clear how the game was going to go. In the 2nd Quarter Summit overwhelmed Montville 9-1 and the game was essentially over. Yager's and Michael Tsiang's ability to control the face offs gave Summit a big advantage.

The 4th quarter was a great opportunity for the "bench" to get a lot of quality playing time.

Tue 05/26 Mendham Group II Semifinals Home 4:00PM Won 6-3 It was clear that this was going to be a struggle. After 8 minutes of the 1st quarter the game was scoreless and 2/3 of the game had been played in Summit territory. At the 3:45 mark that reliable combination of John Scioscia to Kyle Mahoney broke the tie. However, with only 5 second left in the quarter Mendham scored to tie the game at 1-1. The 2nd quarter was scoreless for about 6 minutes until Mendham jumped to a 2-1 lead. Summit was getting some good shots, but they were turned away. Finally, with only 27 seconds left in the half a pass from James Kennedy setup Mahoney for the tieing score.

Summit finally regained the lead 50 seconds into the quarter on an unassisted goal by Adolfo Arietta. Sadly, 40 seconds later Mendham knotted the score again. About 8 minutes later the Scioscia to Mahoney combination put Summit ahead for good. An unassisted goal by Marcel Godino gave summit an insurance goal. The quarter ended with Summit up 5-3. Early in the 4th quarter Arietta scored to make it 6-3. Most of the rest of the quarter Summit played keep away.

Summit will now play Moorestown at Ridge HS on Friday May 29th.

Fri 05/29 Moorestown Away 5PM Won 9-8 What a seesaw battle! The winning score came with only 34 seconds left in the game and propelled Summit to the Group II championship. The first two minutes of the game was all Summit. In that period Summit won the face-off 3 times and scores 3 times on beautifully executed plays. Kyle Mahoney scored first off a pass from John Scioscia. That was followed a minute later when Scioscia scored off a feed from James Kennedy. 46 second after that Mahoney scored again off a pass from Kennedy. This was pretty heady stuff and the Summit fans may have gotten too comfortable. Moorestown roared back with 3 goals to tie the score at the 6:23 mark. Kennedy answered with a goal , assisted by Scioscia. However, with 11 seconds left in the quarter Moorestown again tied the score.

In the 2nd quarter It looked like Summit might pull away as they scored 3 times; Joe Cordrey (unassisted), Kennedy (Scioscia assist) and Mahoney (Kennedy assist). But Moorestown answered with a goal to end the half with Summit up 7-5.

Kennedy scored unassisted to start the 3rd quarter. This restored a three goal lead for Summit (8-5). Moorestown fought back late in the quarter with two goals and the quarter ended 8-7. The final quarter was a standoff until Moorestown tied the score after almost 6 minutes of play. Both teams had some great chances to take the lead but some great saves and defensive plays kept the score 8-8. Over the final 2:30 of the game the tension was awful because Moorestown had the ball. With about a minute left Summit got the ball back and regained to lead for good pretty much the way it began with a perfect pass from Kennedy and a great shot by Mahoney with 32 seconds left in the game. Of course, those 32 second seemed to last forever until Summit wrested the ball from Moorestown with 6 seconds on the clock.

05/06 Sat NJSIAA TOC Finals Away 3PM Won 8-4 I don't think many Hilltoppers will need to read this account of the game, since nearly all of Summit was at this exciting game. Delbarton took the opening faceoff and scored with only 6 seconds gone off the clock. The fans were stunned. Amazingly, Delbarton who had scored in 6 seconds, was then held scoreless for the next 45 minutes. The Green Wave succumbed to some great Summit defense and brilliant goal keeping by Brian Feeney. Ultimately Summit was out shot 37 to 17 but Feeney had 14 saves to the Delbarton goalie's 6.

Delbarton continued to have the upper hand through most of the 1st quarter, but with 30 seconds on the clock James Kennedy took a pass from John Scioscia and scored to even things at 1-1. The game was scoreless for the first 8 minutes of the 2nd quarter until Danny Feeney scored an unassisted goal. This was followed by a classic Kyle Mahoney goal off a pass from Scioscia. With Summit now up 3-1 and the half winding down Summit was just trying to keep Delbarton from scoring. Feeney made a save with about 6 seconds on the clock and threw the ball the length of the field to run out the clock. However, Kennedy caught it and and fired it into the goal as the buzzer sounded. As a result Summit had a 4-1 advantage at the half.

The second half began with everyone expecting Delbarton to step up the tempo of their game. Half way through the quarter Delbarton still hadn't scored. At 5:22 in the 3rd Kennedy picked up an unassisted goal and he followed it up 3 minutes later when he took a Scioscia pass and scored. The Hilltopper fans were in awe. Instead of Delbarton closing the gap Summit had widened it to 6-1.

The final quarter continued the same pattern. Kennedy scored unassisted at 9:47 and Jake Hall made the score 8-1 with 6 minutes on the clock. From that point on Summit was mostly concerned with killing the clock. Delbarton, swarming in desperation, did manage 3 goals in the final 3 minutes to make the score look more respectable, but final outcome was never in doubt.

Summit's offense played its game to perfection and the defense had held the powerful Delbarton scoring machine scoreless for 45 minutes. What a terrific victory.
