The Hilltoppers (3-1) faced off against the Carteret Ramblers (1-4) Saturday afternoon at Tatlock. Given the records, Summit may have expected to walk away with an easy win – but that was not the case.
The teams traded scores in the first quarter. Summit got on the board with a 35-yard TD pass from Charlie Schaffer to Bryce Lubin. Carteret answered with a 55-yard TD run. The difference was Summit’s 2pt conversion on a Colin Beatty run, bringing the Hilltoppers into halftime with an 8-6 lead.
The third quarter was all Summit. First, Conor St Amant took a Schaffer pass 65 yards to the house. Next, a Jack Holmes punt block set the Hilltoppers up deep in Rambler territory. Matthew Loeloff capitalized on the field position with a 2-yard TD run, bringing the score to 21-6.
The ramblers would not go away without a fight, putting together a long scoring drive that brought the count to 21-14 early in the fourth quarter.
A stout Hilltopper defense didn’t give another inch, ultimately putting the game away with a James Wattick fumble recovery.
Summit next takes the field for Friday Night Lights – Friday, October 8 at 7pm at Tatlock!
